banatu festival 2015
cabanatuan city
january 30 - february 03, 2015
In celebration of the 65th Founding Anniversary of Cabanatuan as a chartered city, the City Government of Cabanatuan decided to travel back in time to reminisce and treasure its rich and colorful history.
Several versions account for the origin of the name Cabanatuan, however, three are popularly accepted. One is from the Tagalog word KABATUHAN, which means a place where there is an abundance of stones. The other is KABAN NG TUWA meaning a chest of happiness. And the latest origin to crop up is that the name KABANATUAN was derived from BANATU, a sturdy vine that before amply grew along the swampy banks of Pampanga River.
In the previous years, it had been a tradition to call the annual fiesta as “Araw ng Cabanatuan”. It had brought a lot of smiles to Cabanatuenos but was never famous nor advertised nationwide.
With the newly established City Information and Tourism Office, the committee decided to search for a more suitable name that can be compared to the Panagbenga of Baguio, Sinulog of Cebu, and Ati-atihan of Kalibo, Aklan- a word that would truly describe the growth and progress of Cabanatuan throughout the years, a word that will signify the rich history and prosperous future of the city. Lastly, a name for a festival that will not only bring joy to Cabanatuanes but rather attract thousands of tourists from around the globe.
The Banatu is a type of vine that grow amidst struggling conditions. It is used as a binding rope for Baklads, Bunuhan and Palukso.
Just like the Banatu, Cabanatuan started as a small barrio in the town of Gapan. It may faced a lot of challenges but through the efforts and “bayanihan” of its people, it has risen to be the center of economy of the province of Nueva Ecija.
Cabanatuan has become a sturdy pillar for national growth and advancement, and at present, the people are striving to be more self-reliant-harnessing all potentials as the city is endowed with considerable natural resources; its farmlands are rich and productive; the people are imaginative and hardworking; and the Cabanatueños’ spirit had remained firm and strong.
Indeed, the Banatu Festival is a celebration of our rich history, our growth as a city and the endless possibilities for our City in the years to come.
